The Power of Learning in Public

Six months ago, I started sharing everything I learned on Twitter and my blog. It changed everything.

What is Learning in Public?

Instead of learning quietly in the shadows, you share:

  • What you’re studying
  • Problems you’re solving
  • Mistakes you’re making
  • Solutions you discover

Not as an expert, but as a learner documenting their journey.

Why It Works

1. You Learn Deeper

When you know you’ll teach something, you learn it better. Writing forces clarity.

I’ve rewritten explanations five times because I realized I didn’t truly understand the concept.

2. You Build a Network

People who are one step ahead help you. People one step behind learn from you.

My best opportunities came from blog posts I wrote while learning.

3. Future You Says Thanks

That blog post about React hooks? I’ve referenced it myself a dozen times.

Your documentation becomes your external brain.

How to Start

You don’t need a fancy blog or thousands of followers:

Day 1:

  • Tweet what you learned today
  • Write 3 bullet points

Week 1:

  • Write a short blog post
  • Explain one concept you struggled with

Month 1:

  • Share a project you built
  • Document your process

Common Fears

“But I’m not an expert”

  • You don’t need to be
  • Write for people one step behind you
  • There are always beginners who need your perspective

“What if I’m wrong?”

  • You probably will be sometimes
  • People will correct you (that’s learning!)
  • Update your posts when you learn more

“Nobody will read it”

  • Write for yourself first
  • One person helped is worth it
  • Your audience will grow naturally

My Results

After 6 months of learning in public:

  • 2,000+ followers
  • 3 job offers
  • Countless helpful connections
  • Better understanding of everything I’ve learned

More importantly: I look back and see how much I’ve grown.

Start Today

Pick one thing you learned this week. Write 200 words about it. Hit publish.

You’ll thank yourself later.
